Brophy in Boston

Christopher Brophy, a former year-round and current summer resident of Vineyard Haven, has taken the stage in Boston at the SpeakEasy Stage Company. The play, "Some Men," is a Best Play nominee of the 2008 Annual GLAAD Media Awards. "Some Men" is a journey of nine American gay men, all at a same-sex wedding, who reflect on their lives, from the time of WWI through 1969 and the Stonewall Riots. "The Wiz"

This weekend, the Tisbury School seventh and eighth graders present "The Wiz," directed by Chris Abbott, musically directed by Peter Boak, and choreographed by Cathy Weiss. In addition to the show, the eighth grade is fundraising for their class trip with a lasagna dinner on Friday evening. The dinner is from 5 to 7 pm; tickets are $7; $5; $25 for family of five. Fairy tales set to music

The West Tisbury School's winter production of Into the Woods Jr. runs this weekend, March 14 and 15, with three shows. Director Jordan Winderl and her cast of over 20 perform this adapted version of "Into the Woods," which was performed by the Island Theatre Workshop last May. See the show at 7 pm on March 14, and at 1 and 7 pm on March 15.

Easter dinners

This Friday, March 14, the Vineyard Committee on Hunger is distributing the March supply of government-surplus groceries at the First Baptist Church in Vineyard Haven. An Easter dinner will be given to families who meet the federally established income guidelines.

Skating sensation

This weekend, the Martha's Vineyard Figure Skating Club hosts its 20th annual spring show, "Skating Across America." Returning guest skater is Gretchen Donlan, a novice ladies national competitor. The show is at 7 pm on Saturday, and 2 pm on Sunday, at the Martha's Vineyard Ice Arena in Oak Bluffs. For more information, call 508-693-0208.

One-acts up

The Island Theatre Workshop (ITW) presents their second annual festival of one-acts. Three directors, Lee Fierro, Kevin Ryan, and Leslie J. Stark, present four plays.

Lee Fierro presents "Aria da Capa" by Edna St. Vincent Millay, and "Extensions" by Murray Schisgal. Her actors are Brad Austin, Katharine Pilcher, Max Oskan, Adam Stilgoe, and Xavier Powers in "Aria." Leslie J. Stark and Jessica Buckley star in "Extensions."

Kevin Ryan directs "Domestic Violence" by Frederick Stroppel. Both his actors, Treather Gassman and Mike Gilman, have appeared in previous ITW productions.

Leslie J. Stark, another veteran of ITW, directs and acts in "This Seat is Occupied," by Susan Shafer. His co-star is Talia Luening.

The festival runs this weekend, March 14 through 16, with all performances at 7:30 pm. It continues March 21 at 7:30 pm and at 3 and 7:30 pm on Saturday, March 22.
