Worship workshop
The Rev. Dr. Brian Wren hosts a free workshop from 2 to 5 pm on March 30 titled "The Form and Flow of Christian Public Worship." Mr. Wren is the husband of the Rev. Susan M. Heafield, who serves in the United Methodist Cooperative Ministry on Martha's Vineyard. He will discuss the shape, elements, and history of worship, as well as how to begin and end a sermon. Locked-up for charity
On Wednesday, March 26, Balance restaurant is hosting a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Community members can participate in the "Lock-Up" by raising $800 in "bail money" from friends and families.
Participants can pre-raise their bail money or use the lock-up time, from 11 am to 2 pm, to solicit funds. The $800 will send local children to a summer camp, provide services, and research. For more information, call 508-821-1533.
Chemical free bees
This weekend, the Martha's Vineyard Beekeepers group will meet to discus chemical-free and small cell beekeeping with Dean Stiglitz and his fiancé, Laurie, of Massachusetts Chemical Free Beekeeping Support Group. The discussion is at the Oak Bluffs school on Saturday, March 22, at 1 pm. For more information, call 508-645-9645.
Wanted: Old, nautical photographs
The producer of the documentary film on Island Schooner Captain Zeb Tilton is looking for pictures to use in the film. Specifically, he is looking for the photos of the following family members: Zeb's parents George and Hannah Tilton, wife Edith Mayhew and her children, and of his other marriage to Grace MacDonald. Also sought are photos of Zeb's mates on his Schooner "Alice S. Wentworth:" Alton Tilton, Tom Tilton, Charlie Marthinusen, John Olsen, and Rosalie Tilton (Zeb's daughter). Lastly are photos of other famous sea captains: Hartson Bodfish, Thomas Mellon, Valentine Pease, Parker Hall, and Ralph Packer, as well as pictures of early sheep herding on the Island and the wreckage of Zeb's "Wentworth" after it was destroyed by a storm at Pier 4 in Boston.
