Fifth-grade travelers
The newly organized fifth-grade girls travel basketball team acquitted itself well at the Mashpee tournament last weekend but came away with no wins to show for it.
The final Martha's Vineyard game, Sunday, was with Sandwich. The Islanders trailed by just two points at the half but the more experienced and taller girls from Sandwich pulled away in the closing minutes.
The Vineyard girls (1-6) also lost their games to Northborough and to West Warwick, R.I., on Saturday.
The girls' lone victory on the season was over North Attleboro.
Coach Maureen Hill sees improvement in the girls play, especially on the defensive end of the court with some outstanding play by Diamond Araujo, Mariah Duarte and Emily DeBettencourt.
The girls season ends March 29-30 at the Bourne tournament.
RCBL completes first season
Saint Patrick couldn't or wouldn't help the Celtics in their season-ending tussle with the RCBL league-leading Lakers, Monday evening at the B&G Club.
The Celts did well enough to finish the first quarter in a 20-20 tie with the favored Lakers, thanks in large measure to Scott Dyer's nine points.
They stayed close in the early minutes of the second quarter, even taking a brief 28-26 lead. But Chris Fischer's three-pointer started a Laker run of 19 unanswered points and at the break the Celts trailed, 47-31.
The final game tally was Lakers 104, Celtics 80.
Five Lakers finished in double digits: Karl Kallinich 25, Heath Estrella 21, Jeff LaBell 20. Both John Healy and Steve Araujo had 12.
Celtic captain Brian Scott had the game-high 34 points, including five treys.
Heat cools the Bulls
The second game of the Monday twin bill pit the Bulls against the Heat, teams locked in second place with identical 7-4 records.
The Heat jumped off to a 38-17 lead in the first quarter including eight from long distance, five by Jason Dyer, who leads the league in three-pointers.
The Bulls began the long road back into contention in the second quarter, outscoring the Heat 25-17 to reach mid-game on the short end of 55-42 score.
Ryan Murtha and Clark Agnew powered a Bulls rally, bringing them within three, 68-65 as the final period began. At that point Nick Viera, with the youngest legs on the court, took charge. His 15 points, nine from downtown, were what the Heat needed to seal the deal, 91-84.
Nick's 29 points were the game high. The only other in Heated twin columns: Jason Dyer 26 (7 treys).
The Bulls top-pointers were Clark Agnew, with 27, Ryan Murtha (22), and Sam Berlow (19).
Playoffs to begin
The same pairings, Lakers vs. Celtics, Heat vs. Bulls, begin the league playoffs Monday evening at 6:45 pm.
Winners of the best two of three game series advance to the finals.
Final league standings: (1) Lakers 9-3, (2) Heat 8-4, (3) Bulls 7-5, (4) Celtics 0-12.

Corrections
Last week's Times reported that Scott Smith of Vineyard Youth Tennis had announced that Kent Smith was the first to receive a VYT scholarship. The recipient's correct name is Kent Leonard.
The Times referred to Amy Maciel as coach of the champion girls eighth grade travel basketball team. In fact, Amy is assistant to head coach Lynne Silvia who also coached the interscholastic champion Edgartown girls basketball team.
