Wood team golden
The Wes Wood team (Wes, wife Linda, and David Sousa) took the money on the final two nights of the Dart Season at the PA Club, defeating James Rowell, John Androitis, and Brenda Welch on March 20, 10-1; and Ray Blanchette, Kim Cottrill, and Lance Pope the next week in a playoff. Tennis rainouts
The boys and girls varsity tennis teams season openers with Sandwich were rained out on Monday. Then the boys were rained out again at Cape Cod Academy on Tuesday.
Forecasts look dry enough for the boys team to play at Barnstable Wednesday and host Bishop Connolly Thursday.
The Martha's Vineyard girls team entertains Bishop Connolly on Thursday, and plays at Barnstable Friday, at D/Y Monday, and at Mashpee next Wednesday.
Sailors split openers
The Martha's Vineyard Regional High School sailing team, coached by Andrew Burr, took on the Seawolves of Tabor Academy, the defending National Team Race Champions, on a cold and windy Saturday, and came in second.
Led by senior Captain Emily Reich and junior Skipper Conor Lodge, the young Island team included Skippers Julie Pringle and Solvig Sayre with crews Ty Bilodeau, Emmi Schreck, and Caleb Gray.
Tabor swept the races winning 3-0.
Following the Tabor meet, the Vineyarders raced with Greenwich Academy. Martha's Vineyard won the first race handily, then had to use racing tactics to eke out wins in the next two.
"It was a great day on the Water," remarked Coach Burr, "and a great way to start the season."
Harwich visits Tuesday to challenge the Islanders on the Lagoon. Barnstable and Hotchkiss arrive Sunday.
Ospreys in Connecticut
The Ospreys, the Vineyard's women's hockey team, held their own at the 12th annual women's tournament at Norwich, Conn., last weekend.
The Islanders won their first game, Saturday, shutting out the Rose City Warriors, the host team, 2-0.
On Sunday morning the Ospreys tied the Queensland Space Dogs, 1-1. Later on Sunday, the Vineyarders lost to the Ravens, 2-0.

Skating at Worcester
Nine members of the Martha's Vineyard Figure Skating Club traveled to Worcester to compete in the 42nd annual Worcester Open from Friday to Sunday last weekend.
Alexandra Clark won a bronze medal at Limited Beginner Freestyle, and a silver in Compulsory Moves.
Lindsy Dario took the gold in Limited Beginner Freestyle, and in Compulsory Moves.
Aidee Espino silvered at Limited Beginner Freestyle.
All three girls, Alexandra, Lindsy, and Aidee, won silver at Pre-Preliminary Team Compulsory Moves.
Lily Davey took gold at Basic 4 Program and silver at Basic 4 Elements.
Anna Flaherty won bronze at Preliminary Showcase.
Kaelin Nelson silvered in Pre-Preliminary Showcase.
Olivia Ogden was 4th in Preliminary Showcase.
Shelby Regan won gold at Basic 3 Program and Basic 3 Elements.
Sarah Thomas took the gold in Basic 4 Program and bronze in Basic 4 Elements.
Cool in the pool
Mansion House Swimmers competed in the 2008 New England Masters Championships at Harvard's Blodgett Pool last weekend. Vineyarders Les Cutler, Leslie Craven Grimm, Alex Goethals, and Rainy Goodale ranked ninth as a team.
Individually, Ms. Grimm was 5th in the mile and 6th in the 500-yard freestyle. Dr. Cutler was second in the mile and 9th in the 50-yard freestyle. Rainy Goodale was 5th in the 50- and 100-yard breast stroke events and 14th in the 100-yard medley. Alex Goethals placed 8th in the 50-yard free style and 11th in the 100-yard freestyle, 12th in the 50-yard butterfly.
The relay team was 6th in the mixed 400-yard medley and 5th in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
All agreed it was fun competing with more than 750 athletes ranging from 12 to 85 years old and from as far away as Australia.
Last November three members of the team competed in the US Masters Swimming National 3000-yard (1.75 miles) championships.
Leslie Grimm, swim instructor at the Mansion House and coach of the team, finished 11th in the nation in her age group as did Zoe Pecter in her age group. Les Cutler was 13th in his age group.
In January Ms Grimm and Dr. Cutler swam in the US Masters Swimming One Hour National Championships. Ms. Grimm swam nearly 2.2 miles in the allotted time of one hour and finished 77th in the country for her age group. Dr. Cutler swam just under 1.9 miles. He was 24th in the nation in the men's 65-69 age group.
