Obituary : Benjamin R. Viera
Benjamin Robert Viera, 35, of Edgartown died unexpectedly on Saturday, March 29. Benny was an Island native who was known and loved by many. He was born on Jan. 29, 1973 in the "old Hospital" in Oak Bluffs. He was raised in Edgartown and attended Edgartown Elementary and Martha's Vineyard Regional High School, graduating in June of 1991. After graduating with a solid knowledge and skill in auto mechanics, he decided to attend Cape Cod Tech where he received his ASE Certification. He continued to work for many years for McIntosh Motors and shared combined skills with his cousin Dave.
As a young boy, he enjoyed youth soccer, karate and basketball at the Boys & Girls Club. He loved to spend his free time with family and friends boating, quahoging, scalloping and fishing in Anthiers Pond, Wasque, Great Pond, and with Steve Purcell of Larry's Tackle Shop.
Every Sunday was NASCAR with Dad at home. Also, he enjoyed the many tracks he visited with friends and family. He also enjoyed playing with his nieces and nephews helping them run and play with scooters and motorcycles, and teaching them how to ride bikes, but mostly how to be themselves and enjoy nature.
He was the son of Benjamin R. and Joyce (Norton) Viera of Edgartown and the brother of Renee Viera Habekost and Tara Lynn Viera also of Edgartown. He was also the uncle to Alana Morris, Michael and Alissa May Habekost and leaves behind lots of cousins and his companion Pattiann Scarsella and her son Colby of Oak Bluffs.
Donations may be made in his memory to the Martha's Vineyard Shellfish Group, P. O. Box 1552, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557.
