The local political season is over and the discussions still go on, but perhaps not as torrid as before voting day. The sun has been shining and warming up our section of the world and the Red Sox are finally winning. It really is spring at last.
Here is an advance notice to really make you realize that summer is also quickly approaching. The Martha's Vineyard Boys and Girls Club is seeking support through sponsorships and player participators for the 14th Annual Children's Benefit Golf Tournament. It will take place on Sunday, June 1, with an 8 am shotgun start, rain or shine. Come play at this tournament, to be held at the Farm Neck Golf Club. There will be a continental breakfast beginning at 7:15 am and refreshments on the course, commemorative player giveaway, lunch, and prizes. Anyone interested may call or email Peter Lambos, Executive Director of the Club at 508-627-3372 or plambos@mvbgclub.org.
Movie night at the Oak Bluffs library on May 1 at 6 pm will feature a showing of a new DVD release on the library's large projection screen. Ellen Page stars in this comedy about a pregnant teenager who wants to put her baby up for adoption. Popcorn and drinks will be served.
Saturday last, a beautiful sunny day, was the day on which many friends and family members gathered to say a last farewell to Jean O'Brien who passed away last week. Jean, a wonderful lady, mother, grandmother and friend was also a member of the Lady Star of The Sea Choir for many years. We will so miss her kind smile and manner and her beautiful voice and friendship. Our sympathies to her family, Joanne, Kevin, and Jonathan.
Gary Piccus has loaned the library his fantastic collection of vintage boy's adventure series books. They have exciting covers and are lots of fun to view. They are in the display case at the top of the stairs, with the overflow cased in the Historical Room. The children's room has a new display of sheep figurines and toys.
Today at 3:15 pm, there will be teen games, specifically Guitar Hero and DDR, for ages 10 to 18. Then on Friday, the age six to ten story time will have elephant themed stories and crafts. Be sure to check out the Wednesday, April 30, pre-school story time at 10:30 am as it will have an April showers bring May flowers theme.
With Mother's Day approaching, the Friday, May 2, six- to ten-year-old story time at 3:30 pm will have Mother's Day themed stories and crafts and children will make a present for mom. Mother's Day and spring stories and crafts will also be featured at the Saturday, May 3 Portuguese and English story time and craft starting at 10:30 am. Don't miss this one, because after this, the bilingual story time goes on hiatus until autumn.
Teacher Appreciation Week is the first week of May so think up some special ways of showing your favorite teachers how much you value their contributions to your children's education.
May 20 is the Fine Arts Night and the grade four and five recital at the school. You will be amazed at the talents of these students.
The Martha's Vineyard Women's Network is holding their breakfast meeting on Tuesday, April 29. The subject for this meeting is Customer Service and Sales Techniques and will be held at the Baylies Room at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown. For more information, call 508-693-6344.
We send birthday smiles to Donna Pacheco and Andy Farrissey on April 25, Fred Hall and Todd Alexander on May 5, and Lisa Cottrell on May 8 and we still remember Marilyn on May 7. May 6 is a special day for Kathy and Andy Farrissey as they celebrate their wedding anniversary.
Enjoy your week and send me news of your vacation week experiences.
Peace.
