Each week, a new folk tale is presented for the children to reenact. No former experience is necessary. The class is on Thursdays from May 8 to June 5, 3:30 to 4:45 pm, in the Home Economics Room. Slow cookin'

Homemade dishes made with local ingredients and appreciative diners filled the tables at the monthly Slow Food Martha's Vineyard's spring potluck supper last Thursday.

The Slow Food movement was founded in Italy in 1986. The Island's chapter began in 2005, and works to promote growing, cooking, and eating of local food, and supports local farms and fisheries.

Hero's send-off

The night before he left the Island en route to Iraq, Staff Sgt. Jared Meader's family and friends gathered at the VFW in Oak Bluffs to bid him a proper farewell. He leaves the Island with his friend, Sgt. Travis Bissey, for approximately 13 months.

"We're going over to train Iraqis," said Mr. Meader. "We're working with the Iraqi special forces to train them to do our jobs."

This will be Mr. Meader's second tour in Iraq. Last November, Jared had a brain tumor removed and was out of work for four months. But, he's cleared to go.

"The doctor said I was as good as new," Mr. Meader said. This time, he's assigned to the 126 Brigade Support Battalion - Military Transition Team.

Sunny rewards

In anticipation of Earth Day, SBS hosted a community lunch last Saturday for those who participated in the beach clean-ups around the Island earlier in the day. In addition to food and live animals, there was entertainment by Ballyhoo. One and all enjoyed soaking up the sun.

"I marveled at the number of people who turned up," said Patricia Durfee, a board member of the Vineyard Conservation Society. "It was phenomenal."

Shave and a haircut

Last Saturday the public was invited to two shearing events: Island Alpaca's Shearing Day and the Martha's Vineyard Fiber Folks' Fiber Fest.

At Island Alpaca in Oak Bluffs, approximately 40 alpaca were sheared for their sought-after fleece as people watched the animals be transformed from fluffy to sleek.

Angora goats and sheep were shorn at the Fiber Fest, held at the Agricultural Hall. In addition to the shearing, there were booths displaying yarns and knit clothing as well as information about Felix Neck. Presiding over the FARM Institute booth was enrichment director Melinda DeFeo. Spinning wheels and weaving demonstrations gave those attending a chance to try their hands. Everyone left feeling informed as well as entertained.
