Tonight is the wonderful Evening Under the Stars Gala at the Mediterranean. This worthy event raises funds to assist people on the Vineyard who are dealing with cancer. For more information, call 508-696-5901 or email pcdeck@comcast.net.

Mary Kuehne asked me to say thank you to the Tisbury EMTs and police officer Kelly Kershaw. They took her by ambulance to the hospital in the early morning hours of April 17. Mary is grateful to the hospital staff, especially Crystal and Eileen, and Dr. Lamb. She says they all made the experience easier, making her laugh. She also asked that I tell her husband George that she was sorry to worry you. And to her granddaughter Taylor Kuehne, many thanks for taking the time to come to the hospital.

Mary is now doing fine and recovering from the crisis. On an even happier note, she and George went to Centerville for the first holy communion of granddaughter Sarah Rose, daughter of Chris and Jen Kuehne of Centerville. Sarah wore her father's christening shawl, as her sister Alyssa had before her. The other grandparents, Tom Colligan and Patty Young, as well as great grandparents, Lou and Ed Colligan, also attended. Also coming from the Island was Sarah's godmother Wendy Guarino. After the ceremony George and Mary spent a few days at their new retirement home in Maine, where they plan to move in January.

Look for me if you watch the Preakness. I will be enjoying the craziness and the atmosphere, but fortunately this time there won't be so many big hats. We'll see if Big Brown will continue to hold his own.

The Martha's Vineyard Film Society will hold a special dinner and movie at Outerland on Saturday evening. "I'm Not There" is an experimental take on the life of the enigmatic artist: Bob Dylan. Six different actors portray several incarnations of the groundbreaking troubadour spanning several decades and genres.

Belated birthday balloon wishes go out to Garry Metters of Bowl and Board. He celebrated last Thursday. Jill Walsh parties tomorrow. Saturday is party day for Glenna Moore. Craig Mayhew gets one year older on Monday. Tuesday belongs to Lillian Hammond and Maura Ziemian.

Next Thursday, wish the best to Elaine Ciancio. Party on May 24 with Shawn Townes and Leah Ellis, and on the 26th with Betsy Edge of Fleece Dreams and Ann Haller of Island Heat. The 27th belongs to Kylie Townes and Kristina Ivory. On May 28, Steve Mussell and Cheryl Stark celebrate. Close out the month with a party for Jane Chandler of The Beach House on May 29.

Memorial Day comes early this year. Call town hall or Dana Nunes 508-693-7562 for information on the town picnic. Call Ed Colligan, 508-693-0912, to help with the Avenue of Flags or just show up at 7 am. And be sure to plan to watch the schoolchildren march with flowers down to the harbor at 1 pm on the Friday before the holiday.
