Raided
The Martha's Vineyard Regional High School boys lacrosse team came close to catching an unbeaten Maritime League-leading Barnstable squad, Monday. Close, but no cigar.
After three quarters the visiting Red Raiders held a five-goal lead, 14-9. They had demonstrated well-balanced strength on offense and defense.
But the Vineyarders don't retreat quietly from the field of battle. While holding Barnstable to its already achieved 14 points the Islanders scored goals 10, then 11, then 12, then 13, the last three in the final four minutes. Time became the enemy and it ran out before the purple could make it 14.
Riley Dobel scored six times and Duncan Meyst five.
The Raider's record improved to 13-3 overall, 8-0 in the Maritime. The Vineyard's count is 10-4 overall, 4-2 in the league.
Babe Ruth Leagues
Stuart Hersh of the Blue Jays pitched four innings of one-run, five-strikeout baseball to get the 9-3 win over the Cardinals, Saturday. Both Hersh and Dan Reid had two hits.
Sunday it was the Twins turn to beat the Cards, 9-4, behind Jack Roberts and Will Stewart. Stewart fanned six and was awarded the win. Ryan Fisher was the ill-served Cardinal pitcher.
Later Sunday, the Blue Jays topped the Twins, 12-6. Winning pitcher Mike deBettencourt hurled four innings, striking out four. Chris Morris scored two runs and drove in two more. Outfielder Brendan Maseda was key to the Jays defense.
The girls Babe Ruth League began play last Wednesday with the Yankees besting the Diamondbacks.
