Town Column : Edgartown

I was cracking up this afternoon as the kids were having one of those rare moments when they were actually getting along well and even playing together. I was going about my business doing all the usual Sunday chores but staying close to them and keeping an ear open to listen to what was going on between them. It was funny because even though they were playing "together," they were each playing in their own little zone. Riley was doing the whole little boy, helicopters, explosions, destruction thing and Amelia was willing to be in the war zone but with her little flying toy ponies and fairies and magic. And as I was listening, I realized that through the whole game, as they each threw in new rules as necessary as they went along, Riley was humming and singing his own theme music, heavy on the bass and snare drum. And I was chuckling because I can remember back in the day when we played different weird games, with changing rules but I don't remember the soundtrack. But clearly, it's the way to go through life, no question about it.
Happy Anniversary to Jack and Evelyn Barrett who will celebrate 50 years of marriage on May 24. If you see Jack in his "Clam Van" or down at Katama Bay, be sure to wish him a happy anniversary and then tell him to get home and bring his wife some clams.
The Edgartown Library has great news. The library is closed until its grand opening on May 27 at 10 am. This week they're moving and cleaning and setting up for the opening. They will have the ramp door open for folks who need to pick up materials they've ordered. Also, our hours will change officially on Tuesday as well. From Tuesday through Saturday they will open 10 am-5 pm every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays when they will be open until 8 pm. They will be closed on Mondays for community use (i.e., SHINE, AARP, COA classes, library classes, etc.).
Kelly Hess is back on the road to recovery, following an emergency appendectomy last week. Feeling ill for a couple of days, she finally dragged herself up to the hospital, where she was quickly admitted and prepped for surgery that same night. After a couple of days in the hospital, she spent the rest of the week recovering at home, and fretting because she would be missing work during the opening week at the club. But, for the most part, she behaved and you've probably seen her out and about several times since then.
Happy birthday to Lukas Finke and my Amelia, who shared a birthday on May 20. I can't believe little Amelia is six already. Time really does fly.
Part auction and part 60s dance party, the Martha's Vineyard Public Charter School's Rock Auction is sure to be a blast. The event is Sunday night, May 25 at the Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center and terrific auction items on the block include a week in Virgin Gorda, a sunset sail, filled picnic basket for two, bouquet-of-the-week, fresh flowers throughout the summer, four hours of Bobcat work, and Celtics tickets. The silent auction and hot hors d'oeuvres are from 5:30-7 pm, with the live auction from 7-8:30 and dancing to 60s tunes 8:30-10:30. Tickets are $15, including complimentary wine/beer and hors d'oeuvres, and are available at the Charter School, Alley's, Edgartown Seafood, and at the door the night of the event. For additional information, call 508-693-9900.
I think that's all I've got for now. Have a great week and be sure to get me your news.
