On Friday Tisbury School children made their annual March to the Sea, an event dedicated to the memory of those who fought and died in war. For many Island families, participation in the time-honored Memorial Day tradition spans several generations, ensuring that the true meaning of the holiday is kept alive.
The children marched down Spring Street from the school, then up Main Street to Owen Park. Class by class they walked onto the Owen Park dock and scattered flowers on the water as a tribute to Vineyarders killed in military action. A brief ceremony followed, with the singing of God Bless America and the playing of Taps at the base of the Owen Park flagpole.
