Obituary : Stewart Allen
Stewart Allen, 76, of Vineyard Haven died on Thursday, May 22, at Martha's Vineyard Hospital after a long illness. He was the son of Albert W. and Lenora (Smith) Allen. He was born on July 6, 1931 in Oak Bluffs and was the beloved husband of Elizabeth (Turcotte) Allen. He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Guy Allen, Albert W. Allen, Jr., Eva M. Asselin and Marjorie Corio.
He leaves two daughters, Elizabeth A. Allen and Therese K. Wheeler; one son, Christopher P. Allen and Mary Bryant Bailey. He was predeceased by his son Thomas Stewart Allen. He leaves two grandchildren, Joseph R. Wheeler and Sabrina N. Wheeler; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his sisters, Dorothy Tripp and Roberta Morgan and brothers-in-law, James D. Morgan, Hector Asselin, and Donald Tripp.
Following Tisbury School, he served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954 in Germany during the Korean War and attained the rank of Corporal.
Stewart and Elizabeth were married on June 17, 1956 at St. Theresa's Church in West Roxbury and lived in Vineyard Haven and attended St. Augustine's Church their entire married life.
Stewart worked as a house carpenter, boat carpenter, and custodian. He was self-taught in music and history and found great pleasure in listening to and recording classical music and historic media. He had great pride in the musical accomplishments of his son, Christopher P. Allen, the musical director of the Martha's Vineyard Festival Orchestra. He loved his home and family and will be missed by his cat buddies, Charles and Jingles.
Visiting hours in Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, located on the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road in Oak Bluffs were on Tuesday, May 27. His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, May 28 at in St. Augustine's Church in Vineyard Haven. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven with military honors provided by the Martha's Vineyard Veterans.
