Jane Elizabeth Taylor of Vineyard Haven, a rated figure skating professional, attended a three-day seminar to learn the new judging system that the International Skating Union began implementing after the 2002 Winter Olympics. Following the seminar, Jane was appointed a Singles Skating Technical Specialist for non-qualifying competitions by the US Figure Skating Association.
Ben Cabot of West Tisbury, a stonemason and stone sculptor, has donated a granite sculpture of a red-tailed hawk perched on a post to the Massachusetts Audubon Society's Drumlin Farm in Lincoln. In a ceremony on May 9, Mr. Cabot dedicated the sculpture to the memory of his grandmother, who was born on the farm over 100 years ago.
Janis Vogel of Aquinnah presented her thesis film "Drop" at the Cityvision 2008 Film and Video Showcase at the Director's Guild of America Theater in New York. Janice is a 2002 graduate of Martha's Vineyard Regional High School.
Scott Smith of Vineyard Haven was recently named the Regional Pro of the Year Award by the U.S. Professional Tennis Association. Mr. Smith is the director of Vineyard Youth Tennis in Oak Bluffs.
Matthew Scott of Aquinnah and Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., was nominated for the co-chair office on the committee organizing the first year weekend for families at the college.
Ruby R. Hoy of West Tisbury is this year's recipient of the Martha's Vineyard League of Women Voters annual scholarship. The scholarship goes to an individual pursuing higher education in the area of political or environmental sciences, or women's studies. Ruby is the daughter of Barbara Puciul-Hoy and Johnny Hoy of West Tisbury. She recently completed her freshman year at the University Massachusetts, Amherst, where she is studying environmental science and biology.
