Carlin Hart named interim assistant principal
Superintendent of schools James Weiss recently appointed Carlin Hart as interim assistant principal at Martha's Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS), for the 2008-09 school year.
This is the second time in two years that Mr. Hart has been tapped to fill an interim administrative position. After working as assistant principal at Oak Bluffs School for several years, he has served as interim principal for the current school year while principal Laury Binney took a leave of absence.
At the regional high school, Mr. Hart will fill the position currently held by Stephen Nixon, who assumes the job of Martha's Vineyard Regional High School principal on July 1. Principal Margaret (Peg) Regan submitted her resignation last September, effective at the end of the school year.
After conducting a principal search last fall, a committee recommended Mr. Nixon, one of four finalists and the only local candidate from a field of 12. Mr. Weiss appointed Mr. Nixon the principal-designate in February.
Following Mr. Nixon's appointment, another search committee began the process to fill his position. After reviewing applications, the committee recommended seven candidates to Mr. Weiss, five of them from off-Island. All seven were interviewed at the high school last month.
In a phone conversation on May 28, Mr. Weiss said he offered the assistant principal's job to the candidate that was his and the committee's first choice. However, after accepting the job, the applicant declined to come.
"That left us kind of high and dry, because he was the person we really wanted," Mr. Weiss said. "So we decided to appoint an interim assistant principal for one year and then do a search next March or April and see what happens."
Although Mr. Hart did not apply for the assistant principal job, Mr. Weiss said he reached out to him to fill the interim position.
