Obituary : Stuart A. Bangs
Stuart Arnold Bangs died on June 10 at his residence in Vineyard Haven. The second of three children, he was born in Vineyard Haven on March 12, 1923, to Paul B. and Adelaide Bangs.
A son of the Island, he lived his entire life on Martha's Vineyard, where he graduated from Tisbury High School in 1941. He served his country during World War II in the United States Army Air Force. Following the war, he returned to the Island and worked at the family store, Bangs Market, "The little store with the big business," until his father retired in 1964. It was during this time that he married Dorothy Kenney, to whom he remained devoted for over 59 years.
In 1951, they began a family with the birth of Paul and then the twins, Dana and Jay, in 1955. After Bangs Market closed, he worked as the Post Master at West Chop, as a surveyor, and then in the Vineyard Haven Post Office until his retirement. He continued to pursue his longstanding interests in Island history, beach combing, persecuting shellfish and generally causing trouble.
He and Dorothy welcomed Dana's wife, Elaine Phoutrides, into the family in 1983 and Paul's wife, Margaret St. Denis, in 1984. With the birth of grandchildren Stuart, Gregory, Molly and Deanna, his interests and energy focused on passing all he had to offer to a new generation of Islanders. During his entire life he enjoyed the Island - from its air to its waters to its woods and fields and to its good people in any coffee shop. He was smart, he was witty, he was an historian, he was a jokester, he was compassionate, always ready to help so many. But most of all, he loved his family and friends and was loved by them.
