Last weekend was a busy one for the Island. The HarborFest along the bulkhead was very busy. The day was perfect for strolling along the harbor and shopping at the booths, in spite of dire weather predictions.
I joined other classmates at the Legion Hall in Tisbury where the Tisbury High School class of 1953 celebrated their 55th reunion. (Can you believe it?)
Graduates, along with those spouses who were able to attend, included: Megan Bagley Alley, Bill Carroll, Bradford Clough, Allan Davey, Ann Wilberding Brewer and Sarah Goodale Shepard. We had great fun reminiscing about the past and talking about current events. At times the conversations seemed as if we were all in a doctor's waiting room. If I recollect correctly, I believe those with eye problems beat out the hip and knee replacements and rotator cuff problems three to one.
After agreeing that the "golden years" might have a bit of tarnish at this point, we enjoyed the rest of the evening. In fact reluctant to adjourn, the gathering reconvened at my house on Sunday morning for a coffee hour. Now for 2013 when it will be our 60th class reunion. Wow.
June 21 was a day of celebrations for the Eddie Pacheco family. Erin and Eddie celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary and their twin sons, Robby and Teddy, turned all of one year old the same day. Can't you just see these two boys helping grandparents Donna and Bob Pacheco at Reliable Market in about 15 years?
Mary Ann Romain, a daughter of Mary Ann Alwardt and the late Orland S.M. Alwardt, graduated cum laude from Bay Path on May 18 with a Business Administration Degree. She is married to Lionel Romain, and the couple have two daughters: eight year old Natalie and Alisha who is 13. All of her Island family attended her graduation and needless to say are very proud of her accomplishments.
The Island did itself proud at the New England Regional Junior Olympic Track Meet at Fitchburg College last Saturday. Twelve-year-old Jeremy Alley-Tarter finished first for the 10 to 12 age group in the 800 meter event with a time of 2.29 minutes. Mark Reppert, a junior at the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School, placed first in the 800 meter event for the 16 to 18 age group. Mark's time was two minutes. Congratulations to these two runners.
We send birthday smiles to Leanne Giordano on June 28, Abbey Grace Marchand on June 30, Madeline Alley on July 1, and Rahmale Hopkins on July 3.
Enjoy your week and remember the days are going to start getting shorter now, even if just a bit.
Peace.
