Paul Joseph Fantasia, 57, of Oak Bluffs, died on July 2, at Martha's Vineyard Hospital after a brief illness.

Paul was born in Watertown and first fell in love with the Vineyard during a summer visit while in college. After graduating from Suffolk University in Boston, Paul moved to the Vineyard and has lived here for 30 years with brief sojourns in Florida and Costa Rica. The beauty and magic of this place spoke to him from the beginning and always drew him back. This was his home, and the allure of the sea stirred in him a life-long love of sailing, where he felt most at peace and free.

His first job here was in the accounting department for the town of Tisbury, in keeping with his business degree; but his creative nature required other challenges. His business, Ocean Park Restorations, was his pride and joy. His specialty was the often-demanding work of restoring the unique Victorian cottages of Oak Bluffs. As a craftsman, he was a perfectionist, and this work suited him. His appreciation of period carpentry extended to his love of vintage classic cars and their restoration. Paul just wanted to fix everything.

Earlier in his life Paul overcame significant personal adversity with the help of his friends. As a consequence, Paul was there for others as a friend. Often, affectionately known as "Fanta" or "Paulie" to those closest to him, he was loved by many for his humor, commitment, and his generosity of spirit.

He will be sorely missed by his life partner, Susan Tirabassi, of Oak Bluffs; his brother Anthony Fantasia of Sudbury; his brother Robert Fantasia of Watertown; his sister Maryanne Fantasia Taylor, of Pepperell; his extended family, and this loving community of close friends.

In lieu of funeral services, a memorial celebration of Paul's life is planned for Saturday, Sept. 6, at his house in Oak Bluffs, from 4 to 8 pm. Friends and family are invited to attend and share their memories.

Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, located on Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road in Oak Bluffs. Visit ccgfuneralhome.com for online guest book and information.
