Meetings are held once a month, in West Tisbury in the summer and on Lambert's Cove Road in the off-season. Our sympathies to the family of Steve Murphy who died last week. Steve grew up on the Island and had many friends in West Tisbury and Chilmark. He was president of the Hancock Beach Association and was an avid jogger who, with the rest of his family, always ran in the Chilmark Road Race. Condolences to his children Steve, Ted, Sarah, David and their families, who will be here for his funeral at the First Congregational Church in West Tisbury this Saturday, July 19.

A show of landscapes by Leslie Haughton Zemsky and Arnold Zack of Aquinnah will open with a reception at the Bank of Martha's Vineyard tomorrow, July 18 from 5 to 7 pm. The show will be up until the 25th. A share of the proceeds from sales of artwork will be donated to the Aquinnah/Gay Head Association, Inc.

The walking women will meet Thursday, July 24, at 9:30 am at the Menemsha Hills Reservation off North Road. Newcomers are welcome. For more information, please call Julie Coleman at 508-645-2261

The Friends of the Library are sponsoring two programs next week. On Wednesday, July 23, at 5:30 pm, The Menemsha Fisheries Development Fund will co-sponsor an all-ages film, "The Realm of the Lobster." The film contains "impressive underwater footage," and was originally a National Geographic Television International feature, later aired on public broadcasting stations.

The following afternoon, Thursday, July 24, Linda Greenhouse, Pulitzer award-winning New York Times reporter for the Supreme Court will talk at the library at 5 pm on legal trends at the nation's top court. Both events are free, and the public is welcome.

Ms. Greenhouse has recently retired from The New York Times and will serve as the Knight Distinguished Journalist-in-Residence and Joseph M. Goldstein Senior Fellow at Yale Law School, her alma mater.

The Wild Thing, from Maurice Sendak's book "Where the Wild Things Are" will make an appearance for a library program at the community center on Tuesday, July 22, from 11 to 11:30 am. Don't miss it. It may be scary.

We hear from Susan Berman, the community center's summer program lecture series coordinator, that Dr. Jane Martin, assistant professor of psychiatry at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City, will talk at the center tonight, July 17, at 8 pm on memory functioning in healthy adults and suggest strategies for keeping it working efficiently.

Throwing a clambake is a capital fundraising idea, and that's what the Visiting Nurse Association is doing at the Field Gallery in West Tisbury next Wednesday, July 23, starting at 6 pm. Music by Don Groover, Train Wreck and Vineyard Sound, and live and silent auctions provide the backdrop for a lively evening. Vineyard Clambake Co. is in charge of the dinner. All proceeds go the association. For tickets or more information, Please call 508-696-0785 or visit vineyardnursing.org or mvtickets.com.

Anyone who has received TLC from the Vineyard Nursing staff knows them as professional, comforting, and a great boost to those needing care. The VNA has been serving the community since 1984.
