Chris Wallace drew a crowd in Chilmark

Chris Wallace, host of Fox News Sunday, answered questions from a congenial crowd of fellow summer and year-round Islanders, during a discussion of journalism at the Chilmark Community Center on July 10. More than 200 people attended the evening discussion, the first in a series of talks sponsored by The Martha's Vineyard Times and the community center, titled "Journalists Report on the News." The series is one of several events marking the newspaper's 25th publishing year.

There was not an empty seat in the house, as Mr. Wallace, the host of Fox News Sunday and leader of Fox's election coverage, described his career and his view of journalism's inner workings, including how news stories are found, developed, or assigned.

"The thing that impressed me the most," said Betty Frank-Bailey, community center summer program director, "is that it was very well attended and drew a cross-section of people from across the Island."

Ms. Bailey said she thinks people are particularly drawn to the topic of journalism and the news in this election year. People are looking forward to the next two speakers in the series, she added.

Mara Liasson, NPR national political correspondent, will appear this Sunday at 8 pm, followed by Charles Sennott of the new Global News Enterprises, an internet news agency focused on international news, on Sunday, August 3.

The community center is located on South Road in Chilmark, next to the Chilmark Library. There is no charge.
