Sandwich is gobbled

The Martha's Vineyard Senior Babe Ruth team hosted Sandwich at the high school baseball park Saturday and treated the visitors to a double defeat.

The first game, at noon, was a blow out, 10-1, as Zach Coutinho pitched a complete game two-hitter.

Billy Johnson was 2-for-2 at the plate and drove in three with a bases-loaded double. Kendall Chaves was 3-for-3, including a three-run homer. He drove in four and stole a base.

The second game was a heart-stopper which the Islanders pulled out in extra innings,10-9. The Vineyard was down, 8-1 going into the fifth inning.

Steve McKenna had the twos. He had two hits, walked twice, scored twice, and stole two bases. Zach Coutinho was 4-for-5 with three rbi, and he scored twice and stole a base. Billy Johnson's one hit drove in two runs and he scored twice.

Kendall Chaves was 2-for-3, drove in three, and scored twice.

Will Bevanski drove in two with a hit during a fifth-inning rally. Taza Verycrusse tripled and walked. Scott Merritt was 2-for-3, had an rbi, and walked.

Notes from Niantic

The Men's Summer Basketball League at Niantic Park, Oak Bluffs, is in session Fridays. League games begin at 5 pm and continue at 6, 7, and 8 pm.

Currently first place is occupied by the unbeaten (4-0) Stone Cold Hustlers, paced by the league's high scorer Nick Viera, who is filling the net at the rate of 24 points per game.

Two teams are tied in second place; both the Sandy Scallops and Team Pooty are 3-1. The Martha's Vineyard's and Monstars are even at 2-2. The High School Ballers and Chips Ahoy are 1-3 and the Black Dog, 0-4, has yet to win.

Steve Handy of the High School Ballers is averaging 18 points per game, second best, and Matt Rivers, also of the Ballers, leads the league in rebounds with 15 per game.

Circumnavigation

Hugh Chandler of the Eastern Yacht Club (EYC) sailed Scherherazade to a PHRF Class A first place finish in the Round-the-Island race, the high light of the annual Edgartown Yacht Club Regatta.

The PHRF Class B winner was David Collins of the Beverly YC in X-Dimension.

Top honors in Cruising Class A went to Bill Dingwell of New Bedford in Zoomer.

Roger Becker of EYC, a Holmes Hole Sailing Assn. skipper, was first in the Cruising Class B in Gloria.

12 Meters are coming

The annual Regatta for Classic Vintage, Classic Traditional, Modern and Grand Prix 12 Meter Class Yachts will be held Saturday and Sunday, August 9 and 10.

Net improvement

The Vineyard Merlins, a 3.5 USTA women's team, wrapped up their 15-match season second in the six-team Cape and Island League.

Since May the Merlins have spent Saturdays on the Cape playing back-to-back matches in Yarmouth or Falmouth, running for the 8:15 morning boat and hoping to catch the 5 o'clock ferry back home.

Coached by Mike Johns, tennis pro at Farm Neck and his assistant, Nate Carvalho, the Merlins improved their record in just their second season of off-Island competition.
