Obituary : Harold A. "Skip" Tilton

Harold Ainsworth "Skip" Tilton Jr. of New Bedford died Thursday, July 24, at the Oak Nursing Home in New Bedford. He was 60 years of age.

He was born in Oak Bluffs on Sept. 27, 1947, the son of Edna Louise (Murphy) and Harold A. Tilton Sr.

He was raised and went to school in Vineyard Haven. He enlisted in the Army and served during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Germany.

When he returned, he lived in New Bedford and was a scalloper and fisherman like his father. He later worked for the City of New Bedford in the sanitation department.

Skip was the grandson of Captain Zeb Tilton and the great-nephew of Captain George Fred Tilton both longtime Island descendants.

He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan and belonged to the Dirty Dozen Club.

He is survived by his brother, Timothy Tilton, and his wife, Patricia, of New Bedford, and by a daughter, Kathy, of Westport.

A private graveside service will be held in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven officiated by the Rev. Michael Nagle. The Veterans of Martha's Vineyard will provide military honors.
