Town Column : Edgartown

Summer seems to be flying by. I can't believe it's August already. I spent the weekend in Boston and feel a little out of touch with the Island as a result. I always find it harder to write my column if I've been away for a few days because I feel like I've missed something.
I am happy to report that I've received a lot of positive feedback to what I wrote about the Second Hand Store last week. I feel better knowing that so many other folks out there are concerned that the recent problems will negatively impact the store business, the kids at the Club, and those who most need the store. Thank you to everyone for their positive sentiments. And again, I'd like to take the opportunity to encourage everyone to continue to support the store, whether it is via donations or shopping. It's so important for the community.
On Tuesday, August 12, at 6:30 pm, the Friends of the Edgartown Library will present an internationally acclaimed program of Japanese storytelling with koto music accompaniment on the library lawn, Storyteller and award-winning author Patty Christiena Willis and composer/koto player Mary Lou Prince will present "The Bear Story," accompanied by a Japanese harp. Patty and Mary Lou lived and performed collaboratively in Japan for many years. Patty's book, The Village Above the Stars, has won national awards in Japan and is recommended by the National Japanese Library Association. Their theater work was performed at the Edinburgh Festival where the London Sunday Times hailed their production as the great east-west event of the Festival. Bring blankets or lawn chairs. In the event of rain, the production will be moved to the Anchors Council on Aging on Daggett Street.
In case you were wondering what's been happening with the library's building project, the Friends of the Library will host an open house at the library to provide a summer update to the public about the library's current capital campaign on Thursday, August 14. A brief talk and question and answer period will be held at 7 pm. Refreshments will be provided.
For those of you who were planning to attend Peter Boak's first full-length organ recital at the Federated Church on Sunday, August 10, I received word this week that the event has been postponed until September, with the exact date to be announced.
The Steeple Fund Capital Campaign of the Federated Church in Edgartown is hosting its second Annual Edgartown House tour on Wednesday, August 13. Five South Water Street homes will be open for touring between the hours of 2 and 4:30 pm. Tickets cost $35 each, are completely tax-deductible and may be purchased the day of the tour at the Federated Church on the corner of Cooke and South Summer streets. The ticket price includes tea, lemonade, and cookies served on the lawn of the South Water Street Mayhew Parsonage.
Happy birthday to my sister, Pammy, who became four years older than me on August 5 and happy anniversary to her as well, along with husband, Phil, as they celebrated their wedding anniversary on August 3. And hey, just a little shout-out to my niece, Evie, because she is the cutest and best result of their marriage.
Surely there is something else worth reporting here but if there is, no one sent it along to me. Be sure to email or call with your news. If you do use email, be sure to put something like "news for the Edgartown column" in the subject line so my computer doesn't take it for spam and send it directly to the trash. A couple of people have sent me things that have apparently been lost in the ether. Computers are great but far from perfect, I'm afraid.
Have a great week.
