Scooped by a Cambridge man

Matthew Graziano, 25, of Cambridge, won the annual Scoops 5K Tour of Edgartown road race Sunday, in 17:11. He was 40 seconds ahead of John Sohn, 27, a seasonal resident of Edgartown, who was clocked at 17:51.

The skies were clear and the air was warm - too warm, perhaps, to lend itself to record breaking runs. Whatever the reason, Mr. Graziano's winning time was more than a minute behind 21-year-old Chase Pizzonia, last year's winner in 16:07, not to mention Kevin Grey's 2006 time of 15:46.

Completing the 5K course were 440 runners, 38 more than last year.

Following Graziano and Sohn, were (3) Mark Engerman, 41, Edgartown, 18:01; (4) John Dewitt, 22, unknown, 18:47; (5) Dave Diriwachter, 39, Vineyard Haven, 18:48; (6) Jeff Hanna, 26, Syracuse, N.Y., 19:00; (7) Jackson Parker, 21, Vineyard Haven, 19:05; (8) Alex Kahan, 49, Norwich, Vt., 19:20; (9) Adam Formica, 17, unknown 19:22; (10) Darren Belisle, 31, Edgartown, 19:39.

The first female to finish the run in 20:07 was Stephanie Hodge-Mitchell, 42, just one second faster than 29-year-old Elizabeth Guest of Edgartown. They were 13th and 14th overall. The rest of the top ten women were (3) Bonnie Kingsbury, 29, Vineyard Haven, 20:22; (4) Monica Adler, 16, Manchester, 20:48; (5) Karin Lehr, 39, Belmont, 20:49; (6) Susan Branche, 50, Scarsdale, N.Y., 21:22; (7) Leah Begg, 39, Newtown, Conn., 23:01; (8) Joan Lamachia, 47, unknown, 23:05; (9) Jane Walshe, 38, Edgartown, 21:17; (10) Erin Begg, 14, Newtown, Conn., 23:19.

Appropriately, the three most senior of the seniors in the race reached the finish line together: Bill Norton, 79, Donald Mitchell, 81, and Louis Larsen, 82.

Following is a list of those who finished at the top of their age/gender groups.

Jim Turner
Croquet Club President Jim Turner demonstrated that lawn croquet is primarily a contest of strategy.

"Chess on a lawn"

The 2008 Earl Radford Memorial Hi/Lo Croquet Tournament was played August 1-3 on the Edgartown Croquet lawn near the Edgartown School and Boys & Girls Club. The tourney was dedicated to the memory of Earl Radford, a resident of Chappaquiddick, owner of the Edgartown Inn and a croquet champion.

Players enjoyed three warm, clear days with lots of stiff competition as well as a cocktail party and a tournament dinner.

Tournament winners were Dr. John Schott of East Chop and his partner, Joan Yale of Edgartown. Runners-up were Croquet Club president Jim Turner with co-partners Betty Willis of East Chop and Cay Chamberlain of Edgartown, followed by Dot Dropick of Chappaquiddick and Bill Elbow of West Tisbury.

President Turner called croquet "chess on a lawn, dressed in white."
