HHSA races
Thursday's Holmes Hole Sailing Assn. harbor race attracted 15 boats to the starting line at red nun 6 outside the Vineyard Haven breakwater. A triangular course was set from nun 6 to nun 4 at West Chop to green can 23A at East Chop and back to nun 6.
After a beam reach on the starboard tack, the fleet beat to windward to the green can, then sailed a broad reach on the port tack to the finish line.
First to complete the course, both in real and corrected time, was Robert Hale in the Soling, Wicked. Jerry Goodale was second in Stormalong followed by (3) Mary Worell and David Brown in Second Wind, (4) Don Cohan in Summertime, (5) Roger Becker in Gloria, (6) Dan Culkin in Magic Time, (7) Art Spielvogel in Sea Wolf, (8) Paul Hyman-Young in Eclipse, (9) Phil Hale in Mischief, (10) Frank Sutula in Magic Twanger, (11) Ernie Mendenhall and Kathy Logue in Rocinante III, (12) John and Lisa Stout in Isabella, (13) Sandy Alexander in Falcor, and (14) David Lott in Avanti. Aerie retired.
Five boats posted for the early triangular race, Sunday.
Intended as a two-lap race, it was shortened to one lap in light air. Even so, none of the B division boats were able to complete the race.
Roger Becker, Jerry Goodale, and Michael Loberg were 1, 2, 3.
Ten boats reported for the afternoon race. Winds had shifted to SSW and increased to 5-10 knots.
A zig-zag course was set from red nun 6 to green can 23A to red nun 4 to buoy RW NW in the Sound and back to nun 6 and the finish line.
In the A division, Roger Becker was first in Gloria, and Jerry Goodale was second in Stormalong. Then came (3) Michael Loberg, (4) Art Spielvogel, (5) Don Cohan, (6) Phil Hale, and (7) John Amabile.
B division winner was Sandy Alexander in Falcor. John and Lisa Stout were second and Alan Wilson, third.
HHSA racing continues tonight, Thursday, at 6 pm. Sunday's race will be a Sound race at 12 noon.

Ping Pong
A table tennis tournament at the Chappaquiddick Community Center, sponsored by Chappy Pong and open to all, experienced players or novices, will be held 11 am, Saturday, August 16. Prizes will be awarded to singles and doubles winners. Transportation to the Community Center from the Chappy landing will be provided.

On Tony Kent ice
Two skaters of the Martha's Vineyard Figure Skating Club competed in the 2nd annual Lighthouse Figure Skating Club's Basic Skills meet, Sunday, August 10, at the Tony Kent Arena in South Dennis.
Lily Davey placed second in Basic 7 Elements and Basic Program.
Sarah Thomas won in Basic 5 Elements and Basic 5 Program.
Lily and Sarah are coached by Jane Elizabeth Taylor.
Square deal
Six and a half tables were in play at the Bridge Club of Martha's Vineyard games, Saturday, at the Tisbury senior center,
Winners at north-south were Cheryl Neal and Dorothy Arnold. Runners up were Calvin Bass and Duncan Walton and third best were Gloria and Theodore Manning.
Top marks at east-west went to Barbara Besse and Robert Henry. At place and show were Paul Howes and Clara J. Hargrave and Ann Brown and Bill Levine.

In the A Group, Wednesday, the Atlantic Football Club shut out Monto Orthopedics, 2-0. Antulio Neto scored both Atlantic goals.
Thursday, Sports Haven kept Monto Orthopedics scoreless and won, 2-0. Goals were by John Walsh and Rory Shepard.

Wednesday, in Group B, Shirley's Hardware lowered the boom on Coop de Ville, 4-0 on two goals each by Erly Pinheiro and Lucas Brewer.
Thursday, Coop DeVille and the Martha's Vineyard Celtics played to a 1-1 tie. Luis Paolo Miranda scored for the Celts, Charley DeWitt tied it for Coop DeVille.
Tennis at the Farm
The Farm Neck tennis extravaganza is August 22-24, featuring men's, women's, and mixed doubles tournaments. Entry fee is $100, a benefit for the Martha's Vineyard Cancer Support Group.
In addition to the doubles tourneys, there will be clinics and exhibitions by local and celebrity professionals.
The opening party to introduce players and pros is Friday from 4 to 6 pm.

The Times misstated Johanna Hynes's time in the Scoops Tour of Edgartown 5K road race. In fact Johanna completed the race with the best time in her 30-34 women's age group: 23.39. We regret the error and congratulate the runner.
