Wasn't last week adventure-filled, with all of the activities that went on? Somehow there was also excellent weather, which enabled the Fair, Illumination Night, and the fireworks to go on without the worry of showers or wind that sometimes hampers the enjoyment of these events. The Oak Bluffs Firemen's Civic Association is most grateful for all of the contributions that make it possible for this special night of fireworks, and the many charitable works of this association will continue through the next year.
Jazz pianist John Alaimo will present an Evening Of Music on the Lagoon at the home of Pam and Jim Butterick. Plan to come and enjoy this evening on Sunday, August 31, from 6:30 to 10 pm, at 369 Barnes Road. A donation of $50 will be taken at the door to benefit the Steeple Fund of the Federated Church in Edgartown. There will be great music and light refreshments and, we hope, a lovely sunset over the lagoon. For more information, call the church office at 508-627-4421 or the Butterick's at 508-693-6871.
Just when you thought things were slowing down a bit as Labor Day looms over the horizon, or more accurately this up-coming weekend, our ever-busy library has more activities in store for us. On Thursday, Sept. 4, at 6 pm, the movie night feature will be a new DVD release on a large projection screen. Amy Adams and Frances McDormand star in a romantic comedy set in London just prior to World War II. The movie is rated PG-13. As always, popcorn and beverages will be served. For more information, call 508-693-9433.
On Saturday, Sept. 6, at 3 pm, the library will play host to a book talk and signing. Elaine Pace will discuss her latest book, "Island Home: Why People Come to Martha's Vineyard and Why They Stay." Refreshments will be served.
Representative Eric Turkington, who has served our community for 20 years, will be honored at a retirement and thank you potluck party on Sunday, Sept. 21, from 4 to 6 pm. Everyone is invited to come to the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury to show your gratitude to this faithful representative. Please come and bring a finger food to share. Beverages will be provided.
Young Micah Vought of Oak Bluffs has a new brother, Brady Nicholas Vought. Brady resides with his father, Asa, and his mother, Heidi, in Edgartown.
We send birthday smiles to Pam Melrose and Bink deBettencourt on August 30, Nancy Giordano and Sean Flynn share the next day; Ed BenDavid Sr. and Evelyn Christopher both celebrate on Sept. 2, and Bob Pacheco of Reliable Market will have his party on Sept. 3.
We wish all our summer visitors and residents a safe trip back to their homes. We will be seeing some of you during the next few beautiful weeks of fall. Remember that the schools will be opening on Sept. 4, so please be aware of the students walking and biking along the roads and sidewalks.
Enjoy your week and send your news along to me.
Peace.
