Edgartown

There are a number of people on the Island that put considerable time into making the Red Stocking Fund a success, allowing children to have nice presents under the tree on Christmas day. Two of the people that were instrumental in making childhood dreams a reality are Edgartown residents Gail Gardner and Meghan Morris.

It was hard to walk into the Edgartown Post Office over the holidays without running into someone you know. More often than not, you’d have to wait, but there was usually someone to talk to in line, and the staff at the Post Office, including Postmaster Debbie Chickering, were friendly and helpful at the window.

If you like snow, you could say that we hit the jackpot this past month. Sledding last Sunday at Sweetened Water Farm was nothing short of awesome. With the snow just the right consistency, Joseph and Daniel Serpa, twins Jimmy and Andy Dimattia, and many others enjoyed long and fast rides.

MV Times photographer Ralph Stewart came to the farm to take some pictures, dodging sleds on multiple occasions to get that perfect shot. While the Serpa boys were sledding by in their inner tube, my son Charlie noticed something shiny pop out of Ralph’s pocket. Subsequently, my son Lukas found a set of keys in the snow. It turns out they were Ralph’s, and he was very pleased to have them recovered, noting that locating them was like finding a needle in a hay stack.

The town’s children are back to school and off to a fresh start. With the holidays passed, I hope that teachers will find a settled and focused group of students.

There are a number of new learning opportunities for adults through the Island’s Adult and Community Education Program. ACE MV offers an impressive list of classes for enrichment, training, and for undergraduate and graduate credit from Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies. You can register online through this Friday, at acemv.org.

The Anchors is serving lunches that are open to the public on Fridays from 12 noon to 1 pm. This Friday, Jan. 8, stuffed pork tenderloin with orange glaze and turnip chowder is on the menu. The cost is $5 – you can’t beat the price or the good company at the senior center.

Jim Athearn is leaving his position as the Edgartown Selectmen’s appointed representative to the Martha’s Vineyard Commission (MVC) after 10 years on the job. Congratulations to Jim for all his hard work and success.

Jim and his family are working on plans to expand Morning Glory Farm. Wouldn’t it be wonderful for them to have a bigger store to accommodate the great demand for their products, especially in the high season? It is always a pleasure to shop there, and you can’t beat their fresh eggs.

Jim Joyce, a broker and co-owner at Carroll & Vincent Real Estate in Edgartown, is taking over Jim Athearn’s position at the MVC. Best of luck in your new position, Jim.

With the holidays behind us, it’s a great time to get things done or pick up that hobby that you have been neglecting. While summer is great, the slower pace in life this time of year helps to recharge the spirit.

Make every day special.
