The Steamship Authority (SSA) members approved a special rate for seriously ill Island residents at their monthly meeting held Tuesday in New Bedford, according to a management report.
The members approved a rate half the already discounted excursion fare for Island residents who need to travel on a repeated basis to the mainland for special medical treatments, such as chemotherapy. Medical documentation and the approval of the reservation department will be required to qualify for the discounted fare.
The board members also heard an update on the Oak Bluffs terminal reconstruction project. Despite a significant delay in the building schedule due to the need to add a new foundation, the SSA has made up the time and expects to have an occupancy permit in early May, well ahead of the terminal’s scheduled opening for the summer season, on May 20.
