William Harrison Maynard, Jr., 81,a longtime seasonal resident of Aquinnah, died April 15 at his home in Larchmont, NY with his family by his side. He was the son of William H. and Charlotte (Wadlin) Maynard of Poughkeepsie, NY. He grew up in Highland, New York with his brother Frederick and sister Audrey, who predeceased him.
Bill was the president of his class at Highland High and played for the state champion Highland High football team. He graduated from Union College in 1950 and served his country in Korea as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army’s 936th Field Artillery Battalion. In 1954, Bill married Marilyn (Goewey) of Newburgh, New York. Bill and Marilyn settled in Larchmont, NY. to raise their four children. The couple spent their summers on Martha’s Vineyard since 1980.
A successful career in advertising led to roles as Managing Director of Creative Services for Ted Bates Worldwide and the International Advertising Manager of the Colgate-Palmolive Company. Bill has also worked as a sports writer, a magazine contributing editor, and wrote five books for children and gave motivational talks to employees and clients all over the world. He was also an accomplished painter and pianist and an avid golfer and sailor at Larchmont Yacht Club.
Bill is survived by his wife Marilyn, his brother Fred, daughter Laurie and sons William H. Maynard III, Christopher and Mary (Devine), and Jeffrey, and grandchildren, William H. Maynard IV, Sarah Oommen, Elvis Maynard, Wyatt Maynard, Hannah Maynard, Luke Maynard and Liam Maynard. A celebration of Bill’s life and memorial service was held on April 21 at St John’s Episcopal Church in Larchmont, New York. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Community Baptist Church of Gay Head, Box 2787, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568; or to St John’s Episcopal Church, Fountain Square, Larchmont, New York, 10538.
