Aquinnah

I can’t begin to tell you how much I’m enjoying this spring. Last year’s was so wretched and this one has been just fabulous, lots of warmth and sunshine and rain only when needed. Can’t it always be this way? I was in Boston over the weekend and it was absolutely balmy, like summer. I liked it.

The Chilmark Tavern should be opening this evening if all goes according to plan. Come by to meet the new owners, Aquinnah residents Paul and Louise Petersiel, and to check out the new menu.

It’s all happening! Before you know it, it will be Memorial Day and we’ll be complaining about the traffic and the tourists. The Chilmark Store will open on Monday. Larsen’s and Menemsha Café are already open, not sure when the Bite and Menemsha Market will open. The Outermost Inn will open at the end of the month with a new chef. Very exciting to have all these new menus up Island.

On Saturday morning from 10 am to 1 pm at the Chilmark Community Center there will be a Spring Celebration to benefit the Chilmark Pre School. It costs $5 for kids, and it’s free for adults kids under two. There will be pony rides, lunch, games, crafts, a gift table where you can pick up gifts for your mom, and a raffle with tickets available now at Alley’s.

This weekend is the sixth annual MV Goes Pink walk for breast cancer. This event draws a lot of support from all over the Island as we all know someone who has been affected by breast cancer. The walk starts Saturday at Little Bridge on Beach Road between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. Registration is at 9 am and the walk starts at 10 am. There are also raffles sponsored by local businesses, check out the website mvgoespink.com for all the details. If you can’t walk, you can donate or find other ways to help.

Tuesday, May 11, is our town meeting at 7 pm; it is preceded by a special town meeting at 6:45 pm, so just show up then. Remember that we need a quorum (about 39 people in our case) so please come to the Old Town Hall on Tuesday. We will also be voting on Wednesday, May 12, to elect a selectman, a library trustee, a planning board member and a bunch of other positions that need filling. Polls are open from 12 noon to 7 pm at Town Hall.

Happy Birthday to Ella Mahoney who turned 15 on Saturday.

And of course Happy Mother’s Day to Kathy N., Wendy, Nonie, Noni, Noli, Heidi, Faith, Missy, Alex, June, Juli, Amanda, Jenny, Carolyn, Nancy B., Joanie, Kate, Joan, Teresa F., Theresa M., Berta, Adriana, Ona, Anne, Roxanne, Betty, Carol, Nancy L., Andrea, Deb, Natalie, Jeanie, Kathy W., Elaine, and all the other mothers and grandmothers of Aquinnah that I have not remembered. Have a wonderful day, you’re doing a great job, now sit down and take a break and get someone to take you out to the Chilmark Tavern tonight.
