Special cards to hand out to veterans, active military, and their families, thanking them for their service and sacrifice are available from Dukes County veterans services officer Jo Ann Murphy.

Wreaths Across America (WAA), a nonprofit organization best known for placing wreaths on veterans’ graves during the holidays, launched the thank-you campaign this month to coincide with National Veterans Appreciation Month.

The campaign’s goal is for one million veterans, active military, and their families, to receive a personal thank-you by December 12, which is Wreaths Across America Day.

“These business card-sized cards are a tool to help you approach and shake the hand of our protectors and their families when you see them in daily life,” said Karen Worcester, Executive Director of Wreaths Across America, in a press release.

“We want to thank you, for your service and sacrifice,” the cards read on one side. “We promise to remember the fallen, honor those that serve, and their families, and teach our children the value of freedom.”

The WAA thank-you cards are available free from Ms. Murphy or online at wreathsacrossamerica.org. For more information, contact Ms. Murphy at 508-693-6887.

WAA placed over 160,000 wreaths on veterans’ graves and held ceremonies at 412 locations in 2009. In addition to the “Thanks a Million” campaign, WAA is launching an education campaign for children.
