Louise M. Norton died at the Henrietta Brewer House on the second of May, two days after her 101st birthday. Her longevity was due in no small part to her husband’s vegetable garden until his death in 1985. She arrived on the Vineyard in the early 30’s to work at the hospital after graduating from St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. She was an active member of the Friends of the Edgartown Council on Aging, Woman’s Club of Martha’s Vineyard, the St. Elizabeth’s Guild, of which she was a founder, and various bridge groups. She was predeceased by her husband Philip J. Norton, and her son C. Scott Norton. She is survived by her son Philip J. Norton Jr. and his wife, Jane, grandson Philip J. Norton III and wife, Shannon, grandson Andrew and wife, Shelley, and great grandsons Reid, Everett, and Andrew, nephew Robert E. Wood III of Cheshire, Conn., and niece Marcia Wordell, of Mattapoisett. Arrangements are by Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, Oak Bluffs. A graveside service will be held at New Westside Cemetery, Edgartown, on Friday, May 14 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to one’s favorite charity.
