Wonderful news! Cheryl Holenko is celebrating being cancer free after successful rounds of chemotherapy and radiation last year. She’d like your support for the MV Relay for Life on June 4 and 5 at the high school. Cheryl will walk with the team “Mission Possible” captained by her sister-in-law, Jeannie. If you would like to help, send a check payable to the American Cancer Society. Mail it to Cheryl at 21 Chase Lane, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.

Casual elegance is the dress for the gala celebration to benefit the Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group. Guests will gather for an evening under the stars at Mediterranean in Oak Bluffs, with dancing to the Mike Benjamin Trio on Thursday, May 20, from 6 to 9 pm. Donations may be sent to MVCSG at PO Box 2214, Vineyard Haven. Every penny goes to Island cancer patients in financial distress. Get more information at quilt185@comcast.net.

Did you see all those Vineyard Haven Library bags in use at the markets this week? The Friends of the Library must have nearly sold out. These bags are so big that they will hold almost everything.

Thank you to all who took the time to vote last week. Most of the issues have been settled by the election. We hope that the selectmen will soon choose the date for the final hearing on the specifics of beer and wine sales.

Whether you favored this issue or not, it was most unseemly for two of the selectmen, in their official capacity, to write a letter in support of an issue before the voters. We hope that another time they will be more careful to write such letters as individuals.

Our board of selectmen should also be chastised for their selection of which override questions to be put on the ballot. The police contract should not have been set up for an override vote nor should several of the other questions. Certainly, maintenance of town buildings should not require an override vote. Listen up: we voters expect better from you.

Voters understood that an override means that your taxes are going up. Those in Oak Bluffs took a firm stand in opposition. Of course, they had some other expensive costs. You have to admire the brick sidewalks. They are beautiful and set on concrete to stay level and minimize upkeep.

Did you know? Islanders use an extraordinary amount of nasty chemicals on their walks and patios just to get rid of grass and dandelions that grow where you don’t want them. You should know that you can use inexpensive white vinegar diluted with some water to get rid of those plants. It is much kinder to our water supply.

While the world has surged ahead with digital, some of us still use books on tape and VHS tapes. You may be interested to know that the library has a whole shelf dedicated to exchange of VHS tapes. Tired of what you have? Take it to the circulation desk and you can take something else. Do not under any circumstances put such items in the outside box for the return of library books.

Children aged 5 and up are invited to get fit with Lisa Amols next Thursday, May 13, at 3:30 pm at the library.

On Friday, May 14, enjoy the Contemporary Jazz Concert at the Cornell Theatre at 7 pm, presented by a jazz ensemble of professional musicians from West Tisbury and Chilmark — Eric Johnson on electric and nylon-string guitar, Tauras Biskis, percussion, and Boaz Kirschenbaum, fretless bass guitar. Special guest Steve Tully will perform on soprano and tenor saxophones. Affordable tickets are $10, $5 for seniors over 60 and free for children under 14.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out to Evelyn Thomas. Yesterday she celebrated her 93rd birthday. Way to go, Evelyn!

Happy birthday to Garry Metters, who parties on Saturday.

We wish the very best to David Cronig, who will be 96 on May 19. He and his wife, the former Grace Schieff from New Bedford, now reside in Deerfield Beach, Florida. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in April.

Heard on Main Street: Everybody’s mother is special. She’s the only one who knows where the Scotch tape is. Happy Mother’s Day.
