Police investigate Sunday robbery at Heather Gardens

West Tisbury police are investigating the theft of cash from Heather Gardens Nursery on State Road in West Tisbury, sometime late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

Sergeant Jeffrey “Skipper” Manter said police received a call just after 7 am Sunday, reporting that $400 in startup money was missing from the nursery registers.

Owner Mike Saunier told The Times he worked until 7:30 pm Saturday. He left $200 in each of his two cash drawers to begin making change when the nursery opened early the next day. Mr. Saunier said the retail space where the cash drawers were kept is not routinely locked at night. When he returned at 7:30 am Sunday morning, the money was gone.

“It’s kind of strange and uncomfortable,” Mr. Saunier said. “It was really just disconcerting, thinking someone was there. That’s where I live with my family. The business is in the back yard.”

Mr. Saunier said he can no longer afford to be so trusting and will have to change his routine, including bringing the cash drawers inside his home each night. “I feel sort of angry and disappointed,” he said. My sense of trust was violated. I have to be more on my guard.”

Sergeant Manter said nothing else was taken or disturbed in the robbery. He said it was unfortunate that the owners, who live and work on the premises, had their trust violated. Anyone with information is asked to call West Tisbury Police at 508-693-0020.
