SSA makes repairs to Vineyard Haven dock

A Steamship Authority dock-building contractor is pounding away at the Vineyard Haven terminal’s south slip. A crane on a barge is driving new pilings to replace a damaged dolphin, the structures that help guide the ferry into the slip.

Carl Walker, director of engineering, said the work is expected to be completed by the middle of June, just in time for the summer season. He said the work is not interfering with trip schedules.

Mr. Walker also had an explanation for why the freight boat Governor made an unusual entrance Sunday evening to the Vineyard Haven terminal. He said engine controls were replaced over the winter, and during the course of operation it became apparent that adjustments needed to be made. Mr. Walker said it is not unusual to have to make adjustments to engine controls and linkages, and the vessel is operating well.
