New fuel storage tanks, pumps, a canopy, and a fire suppression system are part of a complete upgrade for the Shell service station on Beach Road.
The R M Packer Company owns the station. Owner Ralph Packer said this week that the new tanks are double-walled, environmentally friendly, custom manufactured for the station.
“The tanks that were in the ground were acceptable, but they did need a lot of monitoring,” Mr. Packer said.
When construction crews began to remove the old tanks, there were a few surprises. “We found several old tanks left by Mobil Oil years ago,” Mr. Packer said. “We removed those. We were unaware they were in there.”
Mr. Packer said the new canopy will meet modern height standards, and include an automatic fire suppression system. “It’s not required in a full service station, but we’re going to put it in anyway,” he said.
The station remains open for gasoline and diesel sales, with temporary pumps behind the building. Mr. Packer said he expects the work to be finished by June 25.
