We have a new head librarian! Her name is Kathy Thompson, she was head of the Chilmark library for years and years and the vacancy of a head librarian in Aquinnah pulled her out of retirement. Welcome to Aquinnah, Kathy: all I can tell you is that it ain’t Chilmark.
This Saturday there are many fine activities and causes to support: from 5-7 pm at the Field Gallery in West Tisbury there is a fundraiser for Rob O’Leary who is running for the House of Representatives seat vacated by Bill Delahunt. June Manning is just one of the many sponsors for this event.
The Friends of the Martha’s Vineyard Homeless are hosting a day of music at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury. From 1 to 4:30 pm. there will be performances for families, tickets are $5. In the evening from 6 to 8:30 pm is the Full Moon Dance for adults, suggested donation $25. Dress is Vineyard formal.
And lastly on Saturday, Women Empowered is holding a “Quicken” class from 1 to 5 for $40 (includes cd). Call 508-696-8880 or go to women-empowered.org for all the details.
Since summer is the time on the Vineyard to get or stay in shape, there are a couple of new programs to mention. In case you hadn’t noticed, the Y is open and it is beautiful; go check it out if you haven’t already. Yoga at the Yard started this week. Classes are Monday-Friday at 7 am, Saturday at 8 am, and if you have missed seeing Primo Lombardi at the Chilmark Store you can see him teach a yoga class on Sundays at 9 am. Classes are $16 each, $140 for 10, or $220 for 20. There are different teachers every day of the week. Lastly, the Mansion House is offering a free class every Sunday at 5:30 pm with a different instructor each week.
The MV Film Festival’s Summer Film Series starts at the Chilmark community center on Wednesday, June 30,, with Cinema Circus at 5 pm. Bring your kids to get their faces painted, watch jugglers and performers, eat yummy food and then watch, “Follow Your Heart,” a series of international short films for kids. At 8 pm the critically acclaimed “I am Love” with Tilda Swinton will be shown. And of course there will be food from the Scottish Bakehouse. Go to tmvff.org for the entire summer schedule, and you can purchase tickets online at ticketsmv.com.
Next Friday at 6 pm, The Yard will honor Claudia Miller with the Yard Arts! Festival 5th Anniversary Gala; an evening with the Yard’s finest. There will be dinner, a show, and dessert. Premium seating is $150. General seating is $75. Claudia is a huge supporter of the arts on Martha’s Vineyard and definitely deserves honoring.
Noah Manning turned four last week and had a very fun birthday party at the old Town Hall, complete with a bouncy house.
There was a surprise dinner in honor of Jenny Christy at my house last week and man, was she surprised. It was a small gathering of those of us who were not able to make it to the Friends of the Aquinnah Library party for her.
Juli Vanderhoop sprained her ankle right before the start of pizza night last week, but still managed to host with her leg packed in ice and propped up on a table. Get well soon, Juli.
The fourth of July is almost here. Forgive me, my friends, if you don’t hear from me until September: you know how it is on the Vineyard.
