The sixth annual Della Hardman Day celebration will be held July 31, in Ocean Park. It is a tribute to the late artist and educator. Ms. Hardman was chairperson of the Art Department at West Virginia State College, and after retirement, moved to Oak Bluffs. She contributed to the Island’s cultural community, serving on the board of directors of Featherstone Center for the Arts, the Oak Bluffs Public Library, the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society, and the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, among her other activities.

In remembrance, The Oak Bluffs Public Library is sponsoring a photography contest themed after Ms.Hardman’s philosophy, “Savor the moment.” The winning entries will be published in the library’s 2011 calendar. There will an exhibit of the submissions, which must be matted or framed and submitted today, Thursday, July 15.

Contest judges are photographers Alison Shaw and Donalexander Goss, and Featherstone Center’s director, Francine Kelly.
