Don’t let the ice melt!

Don’t miss the 10th anniversary of Ice Savours this Friday, July 16 at the East Chop Beach Club. The event will begin at 7 pm with a silent auction, wine tasting, and hors d’oeuvres by Herring Run Kitchens. It will continue with a live auction, that will run from 8:30 to 9 pm. Island musicians Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish will then play from 9 to 11:30 pm. The event should make for an exciting and festive evening full of surprises. Proceeds will benefit the Martha’s Vineyard Arena and its user groups.

The East Chop Beach Club is located at 75 East Chop Drive in Oak Bluffs. Advance tickets are not necessary.

Jabberwocky presents “Fame”

Campers and counselors at Camp Jabberwocky will present their rendition of the musical “Fame” this Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm. All adults and children are welcome and the event will be free of charge.

Camp Jabberwocky is a camp for the disabled that was started more than 50 years ago on the Vineyard.

The camp puts on a play every year at the end of the month as a culminating event of the summer. The campers look forward to presenting “Fame,” which they have been focused on since the beginning of the month.

Celebrated priest celebrant July 18 and 25

The Reverand Mark Bozzuti-Jones will be celebrant at Trinity Episcopal Church for the next two Sundays, July 18 and 25.

The Rev. Bozzuti-Jones is visiting from New York City, where he is the Priest for Pastoral Care and Nurture at Trinity, Wall Street. He has also served as a pastoral assistant in Manaus, Amazonas, and Dangriga Belize.

A native of Jamaica, Bozzuti-Jones took his S.T.L. (Licentiate in Sacred Theology) from Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge and his Masters in Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, California.

The priest, who has authored eight books, was awarded the Theologos Award in 2003 from the Association of Theological Booksellers for his children’s book, “God Created.”

Trinity Episcopal Church is a summer chapel located on Lake Avenue, opposite the Steamship terminal in Oak Bluffs. Holy Eucharist is held at 9 am.

Acclaimed actress shares experiences

Jennifer O’Neill is an internationally acclaimed actress, film and television star and former CoverGirl and super model. She is well-known for her starring role in Robert Mulligan’s 1971 film “Summer of 42.” Ms. O’Neill will speak at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs on Thursday, July 22 at 7:30 pm for an event co-hosted by the Faith Community Church and the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association.

Ms. O’Neill will speak about moving from dissapointment, depression, failed marriages, sexual abuse, and addiction to hope and healing. Her story is both a positive and hopeful one and will surely be accessible to many.

Deadline for teen dance workshop extended

Built on stilt’s teen dance workshop Advancedshop registration deadline has been extended to July 25. The workshop is a choreography camp for ages 12-16 led by Abby Bender and will run July 28-30 and August 2-6, from 12 noon to 2 pm. Sustainable entertainment under the stars

ArtFarm presents PigPen Theatre Company in “The Mountain Song” at Featherstone Center for the Arts.

ArtFarm enterprises seeks to create a sustainable arts organization by providing an environment for artists to create and work within the community.

PigPen Theatre Company, an organization formed at the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama in 2008, creates atmospheric and theatrical fables with a unique blend of shadow puppetry, group movement, live music, and original lighting effects. The group has performed in Chicago, Pittsburgh, and will head to the NYC Fringe Festival in August 2010.

“The Mountain Song” was commissioned by ArtFarm to be performed at the outdoor stage at Featherstone Center for the Arts. It is a charming tale fit for all ages and surely will be thoroughly enjoyed under the stars. Bring a picnic to enjoy the show!

“The Mountain Song” runs Thursdays-Saturdays, July 8-25 at 6:00 pm on the outdoor stage at Featherstone Center for the Arts. Friday night double-headers will take place at 6:00 pm at Featherstone and 8:30 pm at the Grange Hall. All tickets are $12. A night for music and history lovers!

The Jim Thomas Spirituals Choir and special guest Lavert Stuart present “Songs from the Field: The Mystery of Spirituals” this Saturday evening, July 17 at the Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs. This collection of songs were sung by slaves to send messages to each other and will be decoded and demonstrated by this teaching choir. Proceeds will benefit the non-profit organization U.S. Slave Song Project.
