Despite Monday afternoon’s deluge, players of the Men’s Summer Softball League showed up at Veterans War Memorial Park for their scheduled games.

The first game pit the improving Treds against the league-leading Hurricanes.

The ‘Canes jumped off to a 3-1 lead in the first inning, aided and abetted by walks to the first three batters. But it didn’t last long. The Treds batted around in the second inning scoring six runs to lead 7-3. The ‘Canes got two back in the bottom of the fourth, 7-5. The Treds responded with a run in the top of the 6th. The ‘Canes edged closer with two in the bottom of the inning.

The score stood at 7-6 as the game reached the final inning.

The Treds went quietly in their half of the 7th, still leading but only by a single run. The Hurricanes accepted three walks, loading the bases for James Holenko’s line drive into center field, scoring two and ending the game.

Sharks Stampeded

Monday’s second game was Land Sharks vs. the Stampede.

The Sharks started well as Tad Gold drove in three with a fence-clearing blast in the first inning.

The Stampede put two on the scoreboard in the top of the second. The Sharks took one back in their half. Both teams scored twice in the third, the Stampede’s deuce rode home on the back of Billy Panek’s first (of two) home runs.

After three innings the Sharks led, 6-4.The fourth inning was scoreless. The Stampede claimed the lead in the fifth with four runs, two on Panek’s second homer.

After a scoreless sixth, the Stampede added four more in the top of the seventh; John Reed drove in three of them with a long ball.

The Land Sharks, trailing 12-6, made some noise in the bottom of the seventh. Specifically, Tad Gold’s second two-run homer. Final score: Stampede 12, Land Sharks 8.
