The Vineyard Playhouse and Artistic Director MJ Bruder Munafo present “The Rise and Fall of Annie Hall” from July 22 to August 7, the New England premiere of a new comedy by Sam Forman, directed by Johanna McKeon.
Henry is a struggling playwright who attempts to acquire the rights to turn his favorite Woody Allen movie comedy into a Broadway musical. In order to achieve his dreams, however, he deceives his loved ones and throws his life into shambles. This contemporary play is a witty depiction of Henry’s journey and the celebrity-driven world in which he lives.
The Vineyard Playhouse is extremely excited for their upcoming performances of the comedy, which has been widely acclaimed and will surely be a special treat for all in attendance. Theater J’s recent production of the play in Washington D.C. was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for best new play and The Washington Post calls the play “An entertainingly cheeky and charming New York comedy.”
The Vineyard Playhouse’s rendition will mark the third production of the new play and the only one where playwright Sam Forman is also playing the role of Henry. He will work alongside a collection of extremely talented cast-members that individually boast a long list of credentials.
Sam Forman is the lyricist and co-book author for the musical “I SING!,” which has been produced commercially worldwide among several other plays. Director Johanna McKeon returns to the Playhouse for the sixth time this year. She has worked on several major projects nationwide and is currently an Assistant Director on the National Tour of “RENT.”
The Vineyard Playhouse is the only year-round professional theater on the Island. It is located on 24 Church Street in downtown Vineyard Haven. Tickets are $30 (Senior 65+ discount of $25). Tickets are reserved seating and available in advance online at vineyardplayhouse.org or at the box office. This year the Playhouse has lowered its ticket prices in an effort to make live theater more economically accessible.
