Peter Rabbit is coming to town! How exciting is that? Mr. Rabbit will be making three appearances at the Edgartown library on July 31 — at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm. Pre-registration is required, as each appearance is limited to 40 children. Stop by the library or call 508-627-4221 to register. Eat your heart out, other visiting celebs.
Graham and Susie Murray are counting the minutes until their Vineyard time in August. I have been warned that children Zachary and Hannah will be arriving with markers in hand, ready to decorate the cast on my broken foot. Luckily, Susie has told Zach that Yankees symbols will not be acceptable on this Red Sox fan’s foot, so he has assured her he will draw me a dog. Says Susie, Hannah mostly just draws H’s these days, so she’s safe. Can’t wait.
Katie Mayhew and David Crohan have released a CD of a live recording of their duets from their Fall 2009 concert at the Whaling Church. A percentage of the profits from the CD will be donated to several different Island nonprofits, including COMSOG (The Community Solar Greenhouse) and Camp Jabberwocky. Katie and David will be performing together again this summer at a benefit concert for COMSOG on August 1 at the Whaling Church at 4:30 pm. The CDs will be on sale at that concert, and will also be carried by The Secret Garden in Oak Bluffs, Aboveground Records in Edgartown, Alley’s General Store in West Tisbury, and Rainy Day in Vineyard Haven.
David Faber has reported on the success of a fundraiser Tuesday, July 20, in honor of the late Alison Smith, who died so unexpectedly on May 9. About 300 people, including over 50 from the Vineyard, gathered in the Foundation Room at the Landsdowne Street House of Blues to enjoy several bands, a DJ, and an auction, with the objective of raising money to establish a scholarship in Alison’s name to the Berklee School of Music. A wonderful, albeit emotional, time was had by all. Over $15,000 has been raised so far, and more is coming in. Donations can be made to the Alison Smith Memorial Fund, and sent to P.O. Box 842, Edgartown, MA 02539.

The Old Sculpin Gallery will be showing works by Gail Rodney, Susan Convery, Sheila Fane, Sharon Daly, and Marston Clough in the upcoming week, with an opening reception the evening of Sunday, Aug. 1. The gallery also offers several courses and workshops, including a children’s art program Monday through Friday 9:30 to 11 am, which my sister and I have fond memories of attending when we were little ones. Offerings for the grown-ups include life drawing classes Tuesdays from 7 to 9 pm and painting Tuesdays from 2 to 5 pm, for which you bring your own materials and may work in the paint medium of your choice. For more info, call 508-627-4881.
