Tisbury

Fortunately for all of us the Fire Department was out washing down the streets early Saturday morning. The harbor beaches were closed after the sewage overflowed. What bad timing! We need our beaches on these hot summer days.

The Tisbury Fire Department car show was the best-kept secret on the Island. Well, at last someone has a proper use for Boch Park.

Our President and his family are coming during Fair week. Most visitors agree that’s the highlight of our summer. Too bad that they will miss Illumination Night, but they may be able to make the fireworks. We look forward to welcoming them back to the Island.

The ban on lobstering has been deferred. What could they have been thinking of? Even to consider banning lobstering in New England is unthinkable. This means you should be even more appreciative of the tasty lobster rolls offered in town. I don’t like to suggest that their popularity is why the ban was even debatable.

Bill Murray was shopping in our town on Saturday. Reportedly he liked what he saw, and we hope he contributed to the Island economy as well.

I think I missed July. I was too busy trying to stay cool. What a summer! I’m trying to arrange my life so that I don’t even have to be present. (That last was a quote from Susan Branch.) Have you seen her rugs and needlepoint pillow designs at The Beach House?

Katie Mayhew and David Crohan have released a CD of their duets from their 2009 concert. A percentage goes to several island nonprofits, including the Community Solar Greenhouse (COMSOG) and Camp Jabberwocky. Katie and David are performing again at a benefit concert for COMSOG on Sunday at the Whaling Church at 4:30 pm. Tickets are $25 and include a reception afterwards. You can buy the CD there or any time at our own Rainy Day.

Brenda Wallis is the fitness director at The Mansion House. She teaches a popular class, which blends strength training, low-impact aerobics, and yoga. It’s free for you to try it out this Sunday at 5:30 pm.

The Vineyard Haven Band plays at Owen Park this Sunday evening. Bring a picnic and plan to enjoy the concert, which begins at 8 pm. Music and a beautiful harbor reflecting the sunset — what more could you ask for?

You already know that everything happens at our Vineyard Haven library. On Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon the little ones will learn more about dinosaurs, with Kathy Forrester leading songs and activities. On Wednesday afternoon from 3 to 5 pm, children ages 8 and up will play with Bruce and learn about Lego Robots.

Adults can enjoy “Summertime” on Tuesday evening at 7 pm at our library. The movie, lemonade, and popcorn are free. Katharine Hepburn and Rossano Brazzi star in the story of a lonely American woman who finds romance in the Venice of her dreams. This ageless film was released over 50 years ago. August is Katharine Hepburn month at the Vineyard Haven Library

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out on Tuesday to Nancy Gardella and assistant fire chief Thomas H. Colligan. Happy birthday to Donald Mitchell. He celebrates on Wednesday.

Heard on Main Street: Life is short. Eat dessert first.
