Four Island road races, all benefiting important causes, are coming up. On Saturday, August 21, run for Camp Jabberwocky, a summer camp for the disabled. The 5K race starts at 9 am at The FARM Institute in Edgartown. Walkers start at 8:30 am, and there is a children’s fun run at 10:30 am.

The second on the calendar is the 22nd annual Sullivan 5K Run/Walk Road Race for Health and Fitness, on Saturday, August 28. In attendance will be the U.S. Surgeon General, Regina Benjamin, who joins former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Dr. Louis Sullivan, and his wife Ginger. The Sullivan’s have sponsored the race since its beginning in 1989. In its 22nd year, the race has raised almost $200,000 for the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. A 1/4 mile fun run for kids starts at 8:45 am; the 5K starts at 9 am. The start is located in Washington Park, opposite Our Market, in Oak Bluffs.

The annual Race for the Library, which benefits the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library, is Sunday, Sept. 12. The 5K race starts at the library, continues to the West Chop Lighthouse, and back. A half-mile fun run for kids 13 and under starts at 9:45 am. The race starts at 10 am. Registration is at 8:30 am. And lastly, the annual Columbus Day 5K Road Race is Sunday, Oct. 10. The popular race starts at Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs, travels up New York Avenue, around East Chop, and finishes at the Wesley House. All proceeds benefit the Island Affordable Housing Fund.
