Tisbury Water Works personnel were called to repair a water main break on Edgartown Road by Skiff Avenue last week. They were alerted to the main break just before noon Thursday.
A contractor doing directional boring damaged the main.
“We are flushing it to alleviate the brown water,” John Peipon, Water Works assistant acting superintendent told The Times.
The water department notified businesses in the area that water might be discolored, after workers found the break. Mr. Peipon assured users the water was safe but not attractive.
Mr. Peipon said the pipe is a main water transmission line that runs along Vineyard Haven Road. The contractor, whom he did not identify, “nicked” the pipe while doing some directional boring.
