Windsurfers crowned

The Techno 293 U.S. National Championship crowned new champions after three days of ideal conditions at the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club. Thirty-four windsurfers traveled from as far as Mexico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, California, and Florida to compete in the Under-19, U-17, U-15, and U-13 age groups, according to a press release.

Jean S. Fugere, 16, from Quebec was particularly strong in winds more than 20 knots and won the U-17 class and the overall title. Rasmus Sayre of Vineyard Haven won the U-15 title and showed mastery over a wide range of conditions to take second. Olin Davis of St. Thomas won the U-19 class and placed fifth overall. Maximo Nores of Miami YC won the U-13 class. Ry Brodsky of West Tisbury took the Silver Fleet in a series of figure-eight reaching courses. Perhaps the highlight for the Gold Fleet was the six-gate downwind slalom race with wind gusts over 20. Video from the first day of competition can be seen at Techno 293 U.S. Nationals video.

Next year’s Techno 293 World Championships will be held at the St. Francis Yacht Club, San Francisco, More than 250 young surfers from as many as 30 countries are expected to compete.

The National Championships were sponsored by BIC Sport, U.S. Sailing, U.S. Windsurfing, West Marine, Gill and the Black Dog among others.
