Martha’s Vineyard Hospital this week began removing a corner of one wing of the old building where the emergency room was previously located.
Tim Walsh, hospital chief executive officer, said the work, part of the original construction plan, is meant to widen a narrow roadway and improve visibility and safety.
Asked about the visit of President Barack Obama, Mr. Walsh said members of the Secret Service and White House medical staff visited the hospital prior to the president’s arrival.
Mr. Walsh said the last time the president vacationed on the Vineyard the White House staff spent a few minutes in the old facility and left behind the impression that it would be used as a last resort. This time around, he said, the White House staff toured the entire new hospital.
“They spent more time and congratulated us on how nice a facility it was,” Mr. Walsh said. “It was nice showing it off.”
