I love when I have the opportunity to visit a new store. New clothes, purses, housewares, fragrances, and so much more. Lucky for us, Summer Street, off Main Street in Edgartown, is host to many new, and established, stores.
Boston Jean Company, just down from Scoops ice cream shop and just before the Charlotte Inn, offers jeans that were designed to be your favorites. They are “inspired by the sites and history of their city Boston,” according to their website, but “you don’t have to be from Boston to get into these jeans.” Whether you love a jean that has sparkle, like their City Lights Jean and Sparkle Tiara Jean or you prefer an aged jean like their Love That Dirty Water Jean, which has slight distressed marks, you will be right at home in whichever pair you choose.
Also new this year is Nina McLemore’s boutique. Nina is a designer based in New York City and her works can be found from Martha’s Vineyard to San Francisco. Nina’s design philosophy is “a line of clothing designed by a woman with fashion and business expertise, for smart, confident women on the go.” A visit to Nina McLemore’s will offer you a colorful palate of shirts, dresses, blouses, and pants made from luxury European fabrics, as well as Asian silks.
While in her sophomore year on Island, Caryna Nina, a Haute Couture Designer, has reopened her Boutique at 18 North Summer Street, just down the street from last year’s location. This year she has added even more of her unique designs for women who enjoy the finer things in life. Caryna strives to make women feel beautiful, confident, and feminine in her couture designs. With her amazing selection of Italian silk chiffon dresses and kimonos (which can be custom made), along with her colorful selection of tops — Caryna is able to sleep well knowing she has reached her goal.
Anchoring these new stores are two well-established and much-appreciated stores. A favorite for many since its opening in 1987, Very Vineyard is consistently worn by a large variety of women, from the best restaurants to the local club. Carol Lattmann, owner and designer, appreciates a fresh approach to batik as exhibited in her fun and full of comfort rayon challis sportswear and dresses. While choosing your favorite new season piece in the store, make sure to complete your outfit with some bright jewelry from their wide selection, and why not add in a new clutch with coordinating sandals to ensure you stun on your next outing?
Complete your Summer Street stroll with a visit to Once in a Blue Moon, celebrating their 15th year as an independent gallery offering the most amazing contemporary art and craft. Their fabulous selection of colorful and unique jewelry pieces by such artists as Bert Hofmeester, Claudia Liedtke, Lesley Strickland (a personal favorite of mine), and Ellen Wolfe will be sure to garner many compliments at your next cocktail party. It is also a great place to finish your summer gift lists with fresh approaches to vases, wall, and even furniture.
If you have a little extra time in your schedule, make sure to visit some other great shops on Summer Street, such as Beetlebung Dry Goods, Needleworks, Penumbra Photographs, The John Stobart Gallery and Nell, who offers a fabulous selection of clothing.
