Parents, townsfolk asked to join in at Edgartown School

The Edgartown School opens its doors for the 2010-2011 school year on September 7, to 314 students. The school especially welcomes 34 kindergartners who will experience half days until September 20, when they attend school for full days. On the first day of school, parents will be greeted by PTO volunteers serving coffee and muffins. Parents and students will notice a newly constructed school store in the main lobby and a greenhouse next to the spectacular school garden. Both of these projects were funded by the PTO.

Joining the faculty this year are three new faces. Nicole Barlett is the new school nurse, Mary Ellen Guyther joins third grade as a teacher, and Julie Giordano becomes the Spanish teacher for grades 3-8. Shelley LaSelva returns to us as the primary reading specialist, and we are also fortunate to have Pam Melrose return as the school’s librarian.

This year’s goals for the school center around the 2010-2011 School Improvement Plan crafted by the School Advisory Council. These goals speak to making current technology more accessible to students, improving student performance in mathematics, increasing parent involvement in the social curriculum, exploring new ways to strengthen the home-school connection, and ensuring that the enrichment program meets the needs of our students.

Parents and community members are urged to become involved in the school by participating in one or more of the following school groups:

The school committee meets the third Wednesday of each month at 10 am at the school. The first meeting is scheduled for September 15 at 10:00 am.

The PTO usually meets the first Tuesday of each month at 3:30 pm in the school’s library. The first meeting is scheduled for September 14 at 6:30 pm.

The School Advisory Council meets the third Tuesday of each month at 10 am at the school. The first meeting is set for September 21 at 10:00 am

The school’s website, www.edgartownschool.org is an excellent way to keep up with what’s happening at the school. The site contains teacher web pages, lunch menus, calendars, and a front page detailing current school events and activities. This website also contains news from the PTO and School Advisory Council.

Open House is set for Wednesday, September 22. Starting at 6:00 pm, the annual Health Fair will take place in the main lobby of the school while a potluck dinner is served in the cafeteria. At 7 pm parents and students are encouraged to visit the classrooms and special teachers.

John Stevens is principal of Edgartown School.
