Mike McCarthy, 2008 graduate of the MV Regional High School, who quarterbacked the Vineyard football team well enough to receive All Scholastic honors from the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald, and to be chosen to play in the annual Shriners football game, is this year’s quarterback at Bridgewater State University.
Mike piloted the Bears to a season opening 34-25 defeat of Mount Ida College at Newton, Saturday. He rushed for 57 yards and passed for a touchdown.
This year is certainly a rebuilding year for the Bears of Bridgewater State. They lost 15 of last year’s 22 starters to graduation and will be dependent on transfers, such as Mike who transferred from Westfield State. Mike’s primary target will be Division All Star Justin Fuller, who ran for 117 yards and scored three touchdowns in the season opener.
Josh Paulson, who also figured large in the recent Vineyard offense, is another weapon in the Bridgewater arsenal available to QB McCarthy.
The Bears have been picked to finish second, behind Maine Maritime, in the Bogan Division. The Mariners received five of the eight first place votes cast while Bridgewater received three. Last year the Bears finished in a tie for second place.
