Susan ‘Susie’ Dunbar Johnson, 66, of Oak Bluffs, died on Sunday, August 22, 2010, peacefully at home. A native of Brockton, she was a long-time resident of Martha’s Vineyard.
Susan’s profound love of helping others defined her life. Susan devoted much of her time serving her community by caring for the challenged and elderly. She cherished her family, especially her granddaughter, Mia. Her cats and her meditation garden brought joy and peace into her life. Sharing her music by singing and playing autoharp were treasured pastimes. A special place was held in her heart for the U.U. Fellowship.
Susan was predeceased by her parents George and Louise Dunbar of Taylorsville, N.C. She is survived by her son, Malcolm Arenburg, and wife, Christine; granddaughter Mia Arenburg; three step-grandchildren: Brittney Coulombe, Garret Gibson and wife, Alex, and daughter, Lily, and Jillian Gibson and daughters Autumn and Brooklyn; a brother, David Dunbar, and wife, Evelyn, of Plympton; two sisters: Anna Henderson of Abington and Roberta ‘Bobbi’ Glass and husband, Timothy, of Taylorsville, N.C.; three nieces: Amanda Dunbar Rogers and husband, Scott, of Reedville,Va., Jean Henderson Dwyer and husband Ed of Carver, Rebecca Glass-Nunnelay of Taylorsville, N.C.; six nephews: Mark Henderson, Bradford Dunbar, Gary Henderson, Andrew Glass, Brett Henderson, and Joel Henderson; and many great-nieces and -nephews; also very special friend Janice Buckner and great-niece Nakita Buckner of Huntington, Long Island, N.Y.
Funeral services were held August 27, 2010 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak Bluffs, followed by a memorial gathering at the Unitarian Universalist Society.
